Brehon Law Talk with Patricia Herron breaks series record
The Brehon Laws of Ireland, a talk given by Patricia Herron of the University of Limerick at Bob's Upstairs Bar on wednesday April 14th was very well attended with the sizeable audience of 42 people enjoying a very well delivered and interesting talk. The crowd was the largest to date in the current series and clearly shows that interest in the talks series is growing.
Patricia had just returned from the University of Notre Dame in the USA where she was lecturing on the subject and her Kanturk talk took her through a historical overview of The Irish Brehon Laws and she also detailed the various laws covering illegitimacy, marriage, criminal and other forms of Brehon Law. Patrick Casey chaired the lively meeting and an interesting questions and answers session followed the talk. The proceedings concluded around 10.20 and several of those present remained on in the downstairs bar to enjoy a session of music organised with the visiting musicians - from France, our dear friends Brigitte and Paschal Froissart, from Killarney Charlie O'Brien and local musicians Timmy Connors, (coincidentally also just returned from Notre Dame University in the USA) Jim Barry, an seanchaí and Tim Browne. Tunes and songs were sung, stores and yarns were told, a half set was danced and some porter and tea was consumed in a very enjoyable music session after the talk. Patricia Herron and some others also joined in the session and Patricia played several tunes on the fiddle before we all retired at closing time. A great night was had and our heartfelt thanks to Patricia for conducting the talk, the organisers and supporters and the staff at Bobs for their support for the session. The donations box took a handsome Euro 93.85 which is very welcome.
The next talk in the session will be on Saturday, May 22nd in Kanturk Town Park and more about this at a later stage.
